Glossary – Vaping and Marijuana Terms

  • ADULT-USE:
    • Term used by state legislatures to describe recreational cannabis for those 21 and older
  • BROCCOLI:
    • common nickname for marijuana
  • BUD:
    • Common term used to refer to the dried, cured and consumable portions of the marijuana plant
  • BUDTENDER:
    • person who works at a marijuana dispensary
  • CANNABIS:
    • the psychoactive dried flower buds, leaves, or preparations (such as hashish) or chemicals (such as THC) that are derived from the cannabis plant
  • CANNABINOID:
    • any of the chemical compounds that are the active principles of marijuana; such at THC
  • CARTRIDGE:
    • container that holds marijuana substance for a vaping device
  • CARTS or CARTIE:
    • a nickname for a marijuana vaping cartridge
  • CBD:
    • non-intoxicating cannabinoid found in the cannabis plant; often used for calming effects
  • COMMERCIALIZED MARIJUANA:
    • exploiting something for financial gain
  • CONCENTRATES:
    • Substances in which the active THC in marijuana has been isolated, have a much higher percentage of THC; also called extracts
  • CRAFT GROWER:
    • facility licensed by the Department of Agriculture to cultivate, dry, cure and package cannabis
  • DAB:
    • term used to describe high potency marijuana concentrates
  • DAB PEN:
    • electronic device used to vaporize high potency marijuana concentrates; known as dabs
  • DANKING:
    • the act of inhaling vapor from illicit street carts (cartridges) that contain THC or synthetic THC
  • DECRIMINALIZATION:
    • The state of Illinois has lessened the penalties associated with marijuana crimes
  • DRIVING UNDER THE INFLUENCE (DUI):
    • driving impaired by any substance: marijuana, alcohol or other drugs, whether legal or illegal is against the law
  • EDIBLE:
    • any food that is infused with marijuana or THC concentrates
  • ELECTRONIC CIGARETTE/E-CIGARETTE/ E-Cig:
    • battery-operated devices that people use to inhale an aerosol, which typically contains nicotine (though not always), flavorings, and other chemicals
  • ELECTRONIC NICOTINE DELIVERY SYSTEMS (ENDS):
    • noncombustible tobacco products; term used to encompass terms such as vape, vape pen, electronic cigarette, e-cig, etc.
  • EXTRACTS:
    • Cannabis concentrate produced with a solvent, such as butane, propane or ethanol
  • FLOWER:
    • term referring to smokable part of a female cannabis plant; most popular form of cannabis due to its versatility of consumption methods
  • INDICA:
    • Cannabis with sedating, relaxing and heavy physical effects
  • JUICE:
    • e-juice or vape juice; a mixture of water, food grade flavoring, various nicotine levels or zero nicotine and propylene glycol or vegetable glycerin
  • JUUL:
    • vape production company, owning large portion of the e-cigarette market; all JUUL pods contain nicotine
  • K2:
    • Name for synthetic marijuana
  • LEGAL MARIJUANA:
    • January 1, 2020 Illinois residents 21 and older can purchase and use marijuana on private property
  • MARIJUANA:
    • cannabis,smoked or consumed as a psychoactive (mind-altering) drug
  • MEDICAL MARIJUANA:
    • using the whole, unprocessed marijuana plant, or its basic extracts, to treat symptoms of illness and other conditions
  • MOD:
    • common nickname for an electronic cigarette, often more customizable
  • POD:
    • filled with vape juice that snaps into a small battery; they’re available in pre-filled or refillable designs
  • RECREATIONAL MARIJUANA:
    • used without medical justification for its psychoactive effects
  • SATIVA:
    • Cannabis with uplifting, cerebral and energetic effects
  • SOCIAL HOSTING:
    • property owners are held responsible for the substance use among teens on their property, regardless of level of knowledge of the use
  • SPICE:
    • Name for synthetic marijuana
  • SYNTHETIC MARIJUANA:
    • Human-made, mind-altering chemicals; their effects can be unpredictable and even more dangerous than marijuana; they are not safe and may affect the brain more powerfully than marijuana
  • THC:
    • tetrahydrocannabinol, a crystalline compound that is the main active ingredient of cannabis; what gets you “high”
  • VAPE PEN:
    • common nickname for an electronic cigarette
  • VAPING:
    • the action or practice of inhaling and exhaling the vapor produced by an electronic device; both nicotine products and marijuana can be vaped
  • WEED:
    • One of the most commons terms used for cannabis
  • WEED PEN:
    • electronic device used to vaporize marijuana, either in leaf or oil form
